How to Prepare for the Oral Component of the CIPLE Exam

What is Tested in the Oral Expression Component
of the CIPLE Exam?
The Oral Expression Component of the CIPLE exam assesses your ability to communicate in everyday situations. Over approximately 15 minutes, you will be required to complete three types of tasks:
Task 1
Personal Presentation
-
Talk about yourself, including your name, age, profession, hobbies, and other relevant information
Task 2
Interaction in Practical Situations
- For example, asking for information in a store or restaurant, or describing a problem in a hotel
Task 3
Structured Discussion
- Answer more complex questions based on a given topic, such as opinions on travel, cultural events, or personal experiences
Tips for Success
- Organize Your Ideas: Before responding, take a deep breath and think about what you want to say. Clear and structured answers are valued.
- Use Full Sentences: Try to avoid one-word answers. For example, instead of just saying “Yes”, say “Yes, I like traveling because I enjoy discovering new cultures.”
- Showcase Your Vocabulary: Use appropriate words and expressions related to the topic.
- Don’t Be Afraid of Mistakes: Small errors won’t disqualify you as long as your message is understandable.
Practical Activities
Role-Playing Scenarios:
Practice real-life situations such as:- Introducing yourself to a group of new people.
- Placing an order in a restaurant.
- Asking for directions to a destination.
Useful Phrases:
Familiarize yourself with common expressions like:- “Eu gostaria de…” (I would like to…)
- “Pode ajudar-me com…?” (Can you help me with…?)
- “É possível repetir, por favor?” (Could you repeat that, please?)

Listen to examples of past candidates’ responses and try to imitate the rhythm and intonation.
